These are three portions of the manifest from the SS Dresden. Near the bottom is the entry for my great-grandfather, Albert Pohl.

Albert Pohl arrived at the Port of New York aboard the steamship SS Dresden on August 23, 1892. His voyage started in Bremen, Germany. An ocean voyage at that time took about 12 days. The ship arrived at New York and then continued on to Baltimore, Maryland, where it arrived two days later on August 25. Albert is listed among the steerage passengers bound for Baltimore.

Albert was a laborer, about 32 years old, from Hungary. He lists both his native country and his last place of residence as Hungary. He had a mere $12.00 in his pocket. His intended destination was Pennsylvania or perhaps Illinois, and he planned to stay in the United States for an extended time.

This Albert Pohl is likely my great-grandfather. From US census entries, it is apparent that he immigrated to America alone, and that his wife and children immigrated the following year. If his wife and children were listed in the manifest, it would have made a more certain match. However his age and native country are consistent with what is known about him. One would also expect that he would arrange for his wife Mary to arrive at the same port of Baltimore the following year.

Here is a transcription of the manifest entry for Albert Pohl:
