"John Pohl donated five acres of land, the property where the present St. Joseph, the Worker, Church stands.
"A 60 by 36 frame building was erected by Henry Lorenz and John Minich (who soon moved to Lansing).
"The church was completed in November of 1882. It was named St. Philomena Church by Bishop Richter. On November 8, 1882, Father McCarthy offered the sacrifice of the Mass for the first time in the new church. He said Mass here every three months at first; later he came once a month.
"...On December 8, 1886, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the church burned to the ground after Mass."
