05 December 1918

Telegram sent to Mary (McKee) Stewart [I00269] from the office of Major General Peter C. Harris, Adjutant General. It indicates her son Russell Thomas Stewart [I00240] was killed in action November 2, 1918. This was most likely during the battle of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

He was killed only nine days before the end of World War I. The telegram is dated December 5 and is probably the first word his mother received about his death. That means she knew the war was over, but she probably did not learn of his death until a month later.
